On September 16, 2026, the National Testing Agency released its provisional examination calendar covering December 2026 to March 2027.
First, JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is proposed for January 22-24 and January 28-30, 2027, with January 31 kept as a buffer date. Second, UGC-NET re-exams for English, Commerce and Sociology remain scheduled for September 9-10, 2026.
NTA has stated the calendar dates are tentative and may change due to administrative, academic, statutory, logistical or other unforeseen circumstances. Publication of the calendar does not constitute a formal notification for any exam.
JEE Main 2027: What Changed (The January Window)
NTA has proposed JEE Main Session 1 in January (22-24 and 28-30, with 31 as buffer). From mid-September, this gives roughly four months of preparation time before the first session.
The Schedule:
Session 1: January 22-24 and January 28-30, 2027
Each date gets a full day. Morning shift (9 AM-12 PM) and afternoon shift (3 PM-6 PM). You’ll be assigned to one shift.
Session 2 isn’t confirmed yet. That comes in April, usually. NTA will announce April dates separately.
What This Timing Actually Means:
You’re preparing during your regular school or college semester. No gap between studies finishing and exam starting. You'll have roughly four months from mid-September to cover everything: all three subjects, all problem types, full-length practice tests.
That's manageable if you start now rather than waiting until November.
UGC-NET Re-exam: Why Three Subjects Are Retesting
The June 2026 UGC-NET was conducted across 87 subjects. Results for 84 subjects were declared on 28 August 2026. Three papers (English, Commerce and Sociology) were ordered for re-examination after an expert committee found factual, typographical, translation and language-related errors (including significant question repetition from earlier cycles).
September Schedule:
English: September 9, 2026, Shift 1 (9 AM-12 Noon)
Commerce: September 9, 2026, Shift 2 (3 PM-6 PM)
Sociology: September 10, 2026, Shift 1 (9 AM-12 Noon)
Who This Affects:
Only candidates who actually sat for English, Commerce, or Sociology in June are taking the re-exam. Everyone else’s June results have already been released. No extra fee for this re-exam. NTA covers the cost.
What Students Actually Need To Do Right Now
JEE Main 2027 Candidates:
Stop waiting for more announcements. You have the dates. January 22-30 is your window.
Map out your syllabus. Identify what you know, what you’re fuzzy on, what you haven’t touched yet. By end of October, you should have covered 80% of your material. November is review and practice tests. December is fine-tuning weak areas.
Start with full-length mock tests now. Not individual chapters. Full papers under exam conditions. This tells you what’s actually weak versus what you think is weak.
UGC-NET Re-exam Candidates (September 9-10):
If you’re affected, check your admit card carefully. Exam center, shift timing, subject code. Download the city intimation slip when it releases (usually 10 days before exam).
Study differently than last time. The re-exam uses a new question paper, but the syllabus is the same. Focus on concepts you struggled with in June, not just memorizing answers.
The Practical Reality: Why These Dates Matter
JEE Main in January is early. Other boards conduct Class 12 exams in February-March. You’ll be sitting JEE before finishing your board curriculum. This isn’t new, but it’s worth noting. Manage both simultaneously or prioritize one.
UGC-NET getting a re-exam is honestly rare. It acknowledges the test had real problems. If you’re retesting, that’s actually an advantage. You know what to expect now. Questions come from the same syllabus. Your preparation foundation is already there. This is a second chance to score better.
What Doesn’t Have Dates Yet
JEE Main Session 2 (April 2027). NTA will announce this separately. Don’t wait for it. Prepare for January. Session 2 becomes your practice run or improvement attempt if needed.
UGC-NET December 2026 session. No notification yet. For students planning December, watch for announcements in October-November. Registration usually opens in October for December exams.

Q1: Can I Appear In Both JEE Main Sessions?
Yes. Many students do exactly this. Take January as your first attempt. Learn what works and what doesn’t. Take April to improve your score. Both attempts count. NTA uses your better score for ranking. But understand you’re studying for two exams in four months. That’s only realistic if you’re already ahead in preparation.
Q2: If I Miss The January JEE Dates, Can I Take April Instead?
You can take April as your first attempt if you miss January. But most competitive students take January so they know where they stand early. Plus, if you perform better in January, you can decide whether to even bother with April. Missing January means losing that advantage.
Q3: What If My UGC-NET Re-exam Date Clashes With Something Else?
Contact NTA immediately through their official portal. You can’t ignore the exam date. But genuine conflicts (illness, family emergency) might get you a reschedule through formal request. Regular academic events (classes, internals) won’t get you rescheduled. Plan accordingly.
Q4: Does JEE Main 2027 Have A Different Pattern Than Previous Years?
No. The pattern stays the same. 75 questions total per paper. 300 marks. Three hours. All questions are compulsory (no optional questions). Three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Math. If you’ve been preparing based on previous years’ papers, continue. The format won’t change.
