International Education | About IB Programmes – PYP, MYP, Diploma (DP)

The International Baccalaureate (IB), formerly known as the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), is an international educational foundation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and founded in 1968. IB students are aged between 3 to 19 years. IB offers four programmes. In 1968, the IB Diploma Programme (DP) was established. DP Program is for Class XI and XII. IB introduced the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 1994 and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 1997. PYP is Kindergarten to Class 7th, while MYP is from class 8th to 10th. About IB DP – International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP), IB Diploma, is the most popular of the four IB Programmes. The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is for students aged 16-19, the program was established in 1968. IBDP was the first program offered by IB.
IBDP Curriculum is covered in 2 years, Grade 11 & 12 (Class 11 & 12).The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is recognized and respected by the leading universities across the world.

The DP curriculum has 2 components

  1. six subject groups
  2. the DP core consists of theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity,service (CAS) and the extended essay.

About IB MYP – International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

PYP program is followed by the IB MYP program. The IB Middle Years Programmer was introduced in 1994. The IB MYP Program is for students aged 11 to 16 years.

The MYP framework encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.MYP prepares students to take up IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP).

The IB MYP curriculum has eight subject groups

  • Language acquisition.
  • Language and literature.
  • Individuals and societies.
  • Sciences: include biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Mathematics.
  • Arts.
  • Physical and health education.
  • Design.

As per the MYP framework, schools have to teach at least 50 hours for each subject group in each year of the programme

International Baccalaureate MYP is equivalent to Class 10 of Indian education and assessment system. In January 2013, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) signed an agreement with IB. As part of this agreement AIU will consider completion of the Middle Years Programme with grade 10 of an Indian education system.

About IB PYP – International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

The IB PYP is the first of four IB programmes for School Education. In 1997, The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme was first introduced. The IB PYP program is for students aged 3 to 12 years. It gives students an excellent foundation for the IB’s other programmes. Currently more than 1,400 schools are offering the PYP curriculum in more than 109 different countries worldwide.
