What is decimal number system?

A decimal number system is the standard system used to denote integer and non-integer numbers. It represents a whole number plus a part of the whole i.e. It is a number that lies between integers.

Similarly, A fraction is a number that represents a part of the whole.

Overall, decimal and fraction are two different ways to represent rational numbers with the only difference being that fractions are written in ratio form whereas decimal numbers are written with a decimal point ‘.’ in between a whole number and the fractional part.

How to convert decimal to fraction?

  1. Make a fraction with decimal number as numerator and the number ‘1’ as denominator.
  2. Count how many numbers are to the right of the decimal place and then multiply the numerator and denominator of the fraction with 10 times that number. For example, if there are ‘x’ digits after decimal point then multiply the numerator and denominator of the fraction with 10x
  3. Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of numerator and denominator.
  4. Divide both numerator and denominator with that GCF to reduce the fraction to its lowest form.
  5. Simplify the fraction to mixed numbers, if possible

For Example: Convert decimal number 3.45 to fraction

  1. Rewrite the decimal number as fraction 3.45/1
  2. Multiply the numerator and denominator with 102 to remove decimal = 3.45 * 102 /1*102 = 345/100
  3. Find the GCF of 345 and 100 Factors of 345 = 3,5,15,23,69,115,345 Factors of 100 = 2,5,10,100
  4. Divide both numerator and denominator with GCF = (345/5)/(100/5) = 69/20
  5. Simplify to a mixed number = 3 9/20 Thus, 3.45 = 3 9/20
