Coaching is expensive. Like, really expensive. Offline batches commonly run ₹1 to 2.5 lakh a year (sometimes higher in Kota or metros). Online options start much lower. For a lot of families, that’s just not happening.
And then you sit in class, and everyone’s like, “Oh, my coaching said this” and “my sir taught me that.” And you feel stupid. Like you’re behind because your parents don’t have the money.
It is time to accept that if your parents are not able to afford coaching, it is not your fault. And it’s also not a death sentence for your marks.
Seriously. Some of the toppers don’t even go to coaching.
Why Coaching Feels Like the Only Option (And Why It’s Not)
Coaching centers pump money into ads. “Join us and you’ll crack JEE.” “Our students get 99th percentile.” All that stuff.
So obviously students think they NEED it.
Also, their friends go to coaching. Their entire friend group talks about coaching. So it feels like everyone is doing it.
But national surveys show about 27 percent of all school students take private coaching, rising to around 37 to 45 percent at higher secondary level (and higher still in many urban classrooms). So in a typical class of 30, you’re looking at roughly 11 to 14 students, not every single one. And the ones who don’t go? Many do just fine.
The thing is, coaching helps if you use it properly. If you just attend and sit there, coaching is useless. You can sit at home and be useless too.
So the question isn’t “do I need coaching” but “what do I actually need to improve my marks.”
What Coaching Really Gives You (And How to Get It Free)
Coaching centers:
Give you a structured schedule. You know what to study when.
Give you extra practice problems. Way more than the textbook.
Give you expert guidance on tough topics.
Give you a sense of community. Everyone’s studying, so you feel motivated.
Give you confidence that you’re doing the right thing.
That’s it. That’s what coaching does.
But you don’t NEED a coaching center to get any of those things. You can get them in different ways.
How to Make Your Own Study Schedule Without Paying
Coaching gives you a schedule like “Monday - physics. Tuesday - chemistry. Wednesday - math.”
You can literally make your own schedule. Sounds silly but it works.
Grab a notebook. Write down your chapters. Make a plan. “I’ll finish this chapter in 10 days. That chapter in 15 days.”
Put it on your wall. Look at it.
Coaching charges you a lakh or more for something you can do in 30 minutes.
The reason people don’t do this is that it feels less “official” when you make it yourself. But your brain doesn’t know that. A schedule is a schedule.
Free Official Resources Most Students Ignore
NCERT textbooks and Exemplar problems are free on the official site.
DIKSHA app has videos and practice linked to every chapter (scan the QR code in your book).
NTA Abhyas app gives free JEE and NEET mock tests.
ePathshala has the same textbooks in digital form.
All of these are government-run and cost nothing. Use them before you look anywhere else.
Free Practice Problems That Actually Work
Coaching gives you extra problems. So you practice more.
But where do they get their problems from? They make them. They solve textbooks. They take from old papers.
You can do the exact same thing. For free.
Your textbook has problems. Do all of them. Not just the ones your teacher asks. All of them.
Get previous year papers. They’re usually free online. CBSE papers, ICSE papers, whatever board you’re in. Download them.
Do those problems. All of them. Multiple times.
That’s literally practice. That’s all coaching is doing.
The practice matters. The coaching center matters less.
How YouTube Replaces Coaching for Tough Topics
When you get stuck on a topic in coaching, you raise your hand. The sir explains.
You can get the exact same explanation on YouTube. For free.
Search “Class 10 quadratic equations” or “photosynthesis Class 9.” There are videos. Good ones.
Some better videos on YouTube than coaching honestly.
The thing is, YouTube doesn’t know you’re confused, so you have to find the right video. That takes 5 minutes of searching sometimes.
Coaching just gives it to you directly.
But if you spend 5 minutes finding the right video, you get the same knowledge. And you probably remember it better because you had to search for it.
How to Stay Motivated Without a Coaching Classroom
Coaching centers have groups. Everyone’s studying. You feel motivated.
At home, you’re alone. It’s easy to procrastinate.
For this, you need to find alternatives. Like actually reaching out to friends. Make a study group. Text friends asking what they’re studying. Ask friends to do mock tests together.
Or join online communities. Reddit has study groups. Discord has study servers. Facebook groups. They’re full of students studying.
It’s not the same as sitting in a coaching center with 50 people. But it’s something.
Also, this motivation thing is partly mental. You can create motivation by just deciding you’re going to do well. Without anyone watching. Wild concept, but it works.
Cheaper Coaching Options and Scholarships Worth Asking About
Some coaching centers offer part-time or group sessions for cheaper.
Like instead of full-year fees, you pay far less for just weekends.
Or they have group batches (20 students) instead of individual which costs less.
Look around. Some coaching centers have payment plans. Pay monthly instead of a lump sum.
Some have scholarships. Like, if you’re a good student, they’ll reduce fees.
So before you give up completely, ask. Some places work with students whose parents can’t pay the full amount.
Affordable Online Coaching That Costs Less Than Offline
Online coaching can be way cheaper than offline. Credible options start from a few thousand rupees and commonly sit in the 10,000 to 50,000 range for the year (some go higher).
Unacademy. Khan Academy (completely free). Vedantu. They have affordable options.
Also, sometimes teachers make their own YouTube channels and give free content. Like full courses. For free.
So before you think you need expensive coaching, look for budget options. They exist.
Consistency Beats Coaching Every Time
It’s not coaching. It’s not money. It’s consistency.
The student who studies 2 hours every single day gets better marks than the student who does 10 hours once a week.
The student who practices 20 problems daily gets better marks than the student who does 100 problems the day before the exam.
Consistency beats intensity. Every time.
Your parents not being able to afford coaching just means you need to be more consistent. Not more stressed.
How to Handle Feeling Left Out When Friends Go to Coaching
If your friends keep talking about coaching and you’re not going, it messes with your head. You feel left out. You feel like you’re at a disadvantage.
You’re probably not at a disadvantage. You’re just different.
And talking about it with someone helps. Talk to your parents. Tell them you’re worried. Most parents get stressed too when their kid gets fewer resources than others.
Or talk to your teachers. Ask them how you can do well without coaching. Most teachers will tell you exactly what to do.
Or talk to friends who also didn’t go to coaching. You’re not alone in this. More students skip coaching than you think.
Free Study Plan That Works Without Coaching
Make a schedule yourself. Cover one chapter every 10-15 days depending on difficulty.
Do every textbook problem for that chapter.
Watch YouTube videos when you’re stuck.
Do previous year papers once a month to test yourself.
Join a free online community for motivation and doubt clearing.
That’s it. That’s your “coaching,” but free.
Will it be as good as expensive coaching? Probably 80% as good. Not 100%.
But 80% that’s free is better than 0% which you can’t afford.
Why Coaching Centers Spend So Much on Marketing
Marketing. Rich parents want to feel like they’re doing something for their kid. Coaching centers take their money and promise results.
Also some coaching centers are genuinely good and the structured environment helps some students.
But they MARKET like they’re the only way. That’s the real problem.
They’ve convinced everyone that coaching is necessary. It’s not. It helps. It’s not necessary.
If it were necessary, every student without coaching would fail. But they don’t. Some do incredibly well.

FAQs
Q1: My whole class goes to coaching and I don’t. Will I fall behind?
Probably not. Some of your classmates go to coaching and still do badly because they don’t actually work. Some don’t go and do great because they’re consistent. It depends on YOU, not on whether you’re in coaching. Focus on your work, not on what others are doing.
Q2: Can I start coaching later if I’m not doing well on my own?
Yes. Mid-year, you can join if you want. But if you’re not doing well now, adding coaching won’t magically fix it. You need to look at why you’re not doing well. Is it the method? The time? The understanding? Figure that out and fix it. Coaching might help with one of those. But it’s not a magic fix.
Q3: If I do well without coaching, will colleges or JEE people think I did it on my own?
No one cares HOW you learned. They only care about your marks. If you got 90% without coaching, that’s the same 90% as someone who got it with coaching. Colleges don’t ask, “did you do coaching?” They ask, “what’s your percentage?” So don’t worry about this.
