Different Types of Government Schools in Delhi

Till 2021, there were 3 categories of Delhi government-run schools:

1. Sarvodaya Vidyalaya: have all classes starting from the nursery
2. Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya: has classes 6-12 and admission is based on an entrance test
3. Schools of Excellence: English medium schools (co-ed from Nursery to Class 12)

To align with the vision of NEP 2020, the Directorate of Education, Delhi is phasing out the existing “special category schools” like the popular Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya (RPVVs) and School of Excellence (SoE) which were started in 2018. The Delhi government has decided to discontinue admissions in primary classes in its Schools of Excellence from 2021. The government is focussing on converting these schools into specialized schools.

The Directorate of Education, Government of NCT Delhi has formed “Schools of Specialized Excellence” so that students with deep interest and aptitude in a particular domain get specialized learning opportunities from the Secondary stage onwards (in classes 9 to12).

Schools of Specialized Excellence will run for grades 9-12. In SoSE, the medium of instruction will be the English language.

What’s different about Schools of Specialized Excellence (SOSE)?

The Delhi government started Schools of Specialized Excellence (SOSE) to provide the students with world-class infrastructure and faculty for new-age curriculum and learning in specialised domains.

Schools of Specialized Excellence are affiliated to the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE).

5. Armed Forces Preparatory School

SoSE has partnered with reputed national and international domain experts to develop the curriculum for Specialized Studies. Partners include IIT Delhi, NIFT Delhi, Vidyamandir Classes, Global Music Institute, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Lend-A-Hand India, among others.

List of Schools of Specialized Excellence (SOSE) Delhi

There are 31 Schools of Specialized Excellence across Delhi. Of these 12 are for STEM, 7 for Humanities, 7 for High-End 21st Century Skills, 4 for Performing and Visual Arts, and 1 (Residential) for Armed Forces Preparation.

Out of these schools, 11 Schools of Specialised Excellence (SoSEs) became operational in Delhi from the 2022-23 academic session and an Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS) started in the Jharoda Kalan area from 2022-23 session. AFPS will be a residential school with focus to prepare students for joining the Indian armed forces.

Schools of Specialized Excellence (SOSE) Admission Process

Schools of Specialized Excellence are English medium specialised schools with classes from grades 9-12.

Admissions shall be offered in class 9 in all four types of SoSEs. For STEM SoSE, besides class 9, admission will also be offered in class 11.

Admission Selection Criteria for Schools of Specialized Excellence

Students will be selected by an assessment of aptitude and interest through a test, and an audition/interview, where necessary as per specialization opted by applicant.

Admission Eligibility Criteria in SOSE

• A minimum of 60% aggregate marks in class 8 is required for admission in class 9 of any SoSE. In case of Performing and Visual Arts, the minimum marks requirement can be waived if the candidate has received award in any Art form in a competition at zonal or upward level.
• A minimum of 75% aggregate marks (best of 5 including science and maths) in class 10 is required for admission in class 11 of STEM
• A relaxation of 5% in eligibility marks is offered to the candidates from SC/ST/OBC (non creamy layer)/CWSN as per the policy of Directorate of Education, Govt. of Delhi

Age Criteria for Admission

For admission to the academic session 2022-23, the following age criteria will be applicable

• Grade 9 – Completed the age of 13 years but less than 15 years as on 31/03/2022
• Grade 11 Completed the age of 15 years but less than 17 years as on as on 31/03/2022

Age relaxation is applicable as per Directorate of Education norms.

Seat Reservation in SOSE

1. At least 50% seats in each SoSE will be filled from students of Govt. schools and remaining seats will be available for students studying in any recognized schools of Delhi.
2. Reservation and age related eligibility for admission is as per norms of the Directorate of Education, Government of Delhi.

Fee Structure of SoSE Schools

No fee is taken from the students of SoSE as per Delhi government norms.
