How do you allergy proof your home? Are allergies like hay fever, rhinitis or asthma troubling you this winter? Try and identify house allergens that are contributing to your misery. Often allergies are aggravated in winter as pollutants increase at this time as particulate matter. But there are ways that you can use to create a healthy allergy proof home.

Tips on Allergy Proofing your Home: Housekeeping tips to ease allergies

The first thing that you do is know what causes your allergy. Is it dust, pollen, pet hair, mold or pollution in general? Once you know what causes you allergies you can move to control that.

  1. Allergy proof bedrooms mean clean bedding. It is crucial that you use dust proof and mite proof linen. Wash sheets, blankets and pillow cases with hot water every week. Same for comforters. They are dust traps and need to be shaken out or washed frequently. It is advisable to banish wool and feathers from your bed and replace them with synthetic and easily washable bedding.
  2. Carpets are the biggest culprits. Get them vacuumed with a HEPA filter enabled machine regularly. Carpet shampooing also works wonders. It is a better idea to keep carpets away and use wooden or high grade linoleum flooring.
  3. It is a good idea to use roller curtains made of washable cotton or synthetic material. Cleaning for allergies means that you need to wash all linen and upholstery frequently.
  4. Keep dust and pollen out to stay healthy. Keep windows closed and rely on air conditioning in pollen season especially. Clean condensation and mold from window panes and grooves to keep allergies away.
  5. Choose your upholstery simple. Use wooden, leather or metal surfaces rather than cloth to keep irritants away. The less the place for dust and pollen to settle, the less the reason for allergies to make you sick.
  6. Pets can cause severe allergies. It is not a good idea to keep pets with fur if you suffer from allergies. But, if you cannot do without your pet make sure you are safe. Bathe your pet at least once a week. Try and keep them out of the bedroom to reduce your exposure to the dander they shed. You will be able to reduce allergic reactions.
  7. Use air filters for each room. They should be fitted with an air filter that is enabled to catch small particles or a HEPA filter as it is called. Keep the one in your bedroom near your head and the clean air should reach your face when you breathe in.
  8. Cleaning your home to control allergens is the most important thing. Many home cleaners, laundry detergents also have allergens. Choose the products you use with an eye on the label.
  9. It is important to keep your home insect and rodent free. The residue they leave behind can trigger severe allergies. Most of the time simple but effective traps can be bought from the hardware store to eradicate the issue. If you still find that your home is infested with pests, use the help of professionals.
  10. It is not a good idea to allow smokers in the house. The smoke from cigarettes can undo all the good work that you do to keep your home allergy free.

Tackle allergens effectively to keep your home allergen free and yourself healthy at all times.
