Pippali (Indian Long Pepper): Health Benefits, Uses, Side Effects

Ayurveda text has mentioned a lot of beneficial uses of Indian Long pepper or Pippali. It is useful in weight loss, treatment of polycystic ovarian diseases or syndrome (PCOD /PCOS), diabetes, and issues related to male infertility such as low sperm count and low motility. It one of the recommended food for rejuvenating and aphrodisiac (vajikaran) purposes.

Health Benefits Of Pippali Or Long Pepper

Weight loss

Pippali has(sharp piercing/penetrating (teekshan) properties, so its ingredients reach deep tissues efficiently and improves the circulation of blood and increase metabolism.

Pippali Or Long Pepper also helps in balancing Kapha Dosha and Meda (which is updhatu of Kapha) hence, useful in reducing the weight. It can also be used in combination with other herbs like cumin seeds, honey, cinnamon, cardamom, etc. 

Regulating blood sugar level

Nowadays diabetes has become a topmost health problem across the world. Pippali helps to reduce blood sugar levels as it stimulates digestive organs to produce digestive juices in more amount. Hence, it is beneficial for anyone suffering from diabetes and related problems.

Polycystic ovarian disease

As we know that putting on weight and fluctuation of sugar level are symptoms of this disease. and in both conditions ,pepper is helpful. It also supports the contraction of muscles of the uterus and regulates the menstrual cycle.

Indigestion

Pippali is one of the parts of trikatu (a mixture of black pepper, sonth, and pippali) which is best recommended for digestive problems. It also stimulates the digestive system due to its teekshan property. It is an ingredient of ayurvedic medicine used for indigestion like hingwastak churna.

Male infertility issues

This spice is useful to address the various problems related to male infertility like low sperm count, low motility, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and so on.

It is mentioned as aphrodisiac so it improves overall sexual function. Pippali taken with milk is the best natural remedy for resolving these types of issues.

Other Benefits of long pepper

As per Ayurveda, long pepper has numerous health benefits as it is used in the treatment of various conditions like asthma, cough, insomnia, psoriasis, tuberculosis, tumors, epilepsy, stroke, leprosy, fever, toothache, headache, etc.

Along with these it is also beneficial in digestive issues like heartburn, indigestion, gastritis, stomachache, diarrhea and cholera. Moreover it can also be used in relieving muscular pain, nasal block and fatigue also.

Precautions in the use of Long Pepper (Pippali)

Although Pippali has several advantages, still precautions are needed before consuming. Long Pepper should be taken under medical supervision, and dose should not be more than 1 gm per day in powder form.

  • Long pepper is not recommended for those people who are suffering from acidity, stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and colitis as it may worsen the condition.
  • It is not advisable to use during pregnancy up to 34 weeks. it can be used after 34 weeks of pregnancy under the guidance of medical supervision.
  • It should always be taken after meals or with meals.
  • The dose should not cross the limit of one gram per day
  • It is better to divide this dose into three parts for three times in a day and take one-third part per time.
  • It is always better to consult with a doctor before using this.
