Many of the young teenage girls these days have a lot of myths in their minds regarding menstruation. We, as parents and teachers, need to bust all the myths regarding menstruation to our child. Here are 13 menstruation myths and facts that we should stop spreading.

The following are 13 myths and facts about Periods (menstruation) that teenage girls face these days.

Myth 1: Menstrual blood is bad blood.

Fact- There is no impurity in the bloodshed during menstruation. It is a gift from God, exclusively given to girls so that they can give birth to a child. When one can give life to an infant, how can it be called bad?

Myth 2: Menstrual blood stinks a lot

Regular hygienic practices like bathing, washing of genital areas, and periodic change of pads, help in maintaining cleanliness that keeps away any kind of a bad odour and unnecessary stinking. Hence, teach your girl child different essential steps to maintain menstrual hygiene practices.

Myth 3: Menstrual bleeding makes women weak and unhealthy.

Fact- Some women experience fatigue while menstruating due to irregular diet and lesser intake of iron quantity required per day for everyone. Regular menstruation is a sign of good health for a girl.

Myth 4: Periods come once in 28 days for all.

Fact- Every human body has a different appearance, and functioning, some are fair, while some are dark, some are tall, and some are short. Similarly, the frequency of every girl’s menstrual cycle depends upon their genetic factors, food habits, and stress level. Few girls have their periods only once in two months, though some face it for about five days in every month.

Myth 5: Periods are some kind of disease.

Fact- Menstruation is a normal process and not any kind of disease.

Myth 6: One should eat separately from family members while having periods.

Fact- There is no scientific or biological reason which proves that a girl during her periods should eat separately.

Myth 7: It is risky and dangerous to engage in sports and activities during menstruation

Fact- It is medically safe to do anything that one normally does. However, some girl’s show signs of fatigue or cramps, only due to inadequate consumption of iron in the body that helps during periods.

Myth 8: When a used sanitary napkin or cloth is thrown outside the house and if a snake crawls on it, you will suffer from infertility.

Fact- This is not true. There is no scientific and logical evidence for this.

Myth 9: We should not touch anyone while menstruating.

Fact- Menstruation is a natural phenomenon which is a sign of good health, and there is nothing unclean about it. Girls should not let anyone make them feel bad about it.

Myth 10: We should not visit temples, carry babies, wear flowers on the head, water plants, touch pickle or go out in the afternoons as the evil spirits might attack you.

Fact- None of these statements is true and does not carry any valid logic.

Myth 11: If birds fly over a sanitary napkin or cloth, you will be cursed by the bird.

Fact- Not true at all as this belief probably promoted to ensure hygiene and safe disposal of the napkins or cloth instead of throwing it open.

Myth 12: There is no correlation between nutrition and the menstrual cycle.

Fact- Nutritious food is essential because it enables the hormones to facilitate menstruation and to avoid any fatigue.

Myth 13: Girls get pimples when they look at men.

Fact- No. Acne & pimples caused by the production of the hormone called androgen when most young girls and boys go through puberty.

Myth 14: Periods are shameful
