The immunity of newborns and infants is weak. Their bodies are immune to only those diseases and infections to which their mother is immune because they have antibodies (large y-shaped protective proteins) they get from their mothers, and that immunity too, lasts only for first 6-8 months. Their bodies are prone to various infections and this is the reason they need so many vaccinations at an early age. The infections can cause serious problems to newborns and infants and in some cases, such infections prove to be fatal. Diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (DTaP), Polio (IPV), pneumococcal disease (PCV13) are some of the vaccines given to babies in their early months.
